Despite and in resistance to the ongoing military assault on the social and economic space in Balata, residents have set up a variety of community organisations. Locally-led and volunteer-run, these attempt to support the camp population in their struggle to survive. Locally referred to as committees rather than NGOs, these organisations rely more on energy and initiative than on their shoe-string budgets. Few have any links to the world beyond Palestine, all feel isolated and alone.
