The children of Balata are exposed to constant military aggression and violence from an early age. Even the smallest children are aware what the words 'soldier,' 'tank,' and 'gun' mean. These children have very few safe shared spaces to live, play and relax. Whether at home, school or in a community center each child is always aware that a tear gas cannister could come in the window at any moment. In collaboration with organisations in the camp, volunteers are continually running workshops on papier-mache, mask making, drawing, painting, creating puppets, graffiti and community murals. Volunteers with artistic skills or the ability to work with children are always needed in Balata. In the past, we have worked primarily with children from particularly socio-economically depressed areas of the camp and disabled children. These activities are organized with no financial or material resources (projects are often done with recycled materials found on the streets in the camp), however residents are always enthusiastic to work on any new projects.
